They are �are assertive, but not intrusive and restrictive. Their disciplinary methods are supportive, rather than punitive.� [Baumrind, 1991 , pg. 62] Authoritative parents are generally perceived to be more open. Finally, �uninvolved parents� are those who have very low responsiveness and demandingness. This category of parents tend to neglect their children and show no active participation in their development. Let us now proceed with the literature review of parenting styles with a particular focus on �permissive parenting� and its outcomes.
             A recent research by Macaulay et.al (2005) showed that parental style has a considerable influence on the avoidance of detrimental behaviors such as drug abuse among adolescents. For this research the researchers surveyed 2129 suburban middle school students. Participants of the study were from 34 middle and junior high schools in NY City. Questionnaires were used to obtain data pertaining to factors such as parental monitoring, discipline, drug related knowledge, attitude, and peer pressure. Information regarding parental practices and discipline were gathered from these self-reported questionnaires. Structured equational modeling was applied to the data and analysis of the results revealed that effective parenting practices had a positive effect on adolescent drug behavior.
